RootsMagic 10 Released

RootsMagic, Inc. has released a new version of RootsMagic, its popular Windows (and Mac) genealogy software line that dates back over 20 years. It’s RootsMagic 10, and just as with previous versions, it comes with a paid version and a free version (“RootsMagic 10 Essentials”). As genealogy search is more and more involved with DNA matches, RootsMagic is leaning heavily into managing your genetic genealogy research (I’ve included a few screenshots at the bottom of the page). I’m most interested in the simplified user interface, and if I can find the time, will post comparisons with RootsMagic 9.

I’ve also included a video below from RootsMagic, Inc. showing the new features of RootsMagic 10, but here are the highlights:

  • DNA Match Management – Record and analyze DNA matches and predict relationships, and generate reports (using the Leeds method).
  • Health and Medical History Tracking – Document your family’s medical history, including the ability to generate comprehensive health reports.
  • Advanced Search Features – New search capabilities, including rules-based searching.
  • Enhanced Data Management Tools – Customize the display of names for different culture, easily copy or move facts between individuals more efficiently.
  • Dynamic Group Features – Refresh and update groups based on new data directly from the main screen – no need to go through multiple forms.
  • Simplified User Interface – Streamlined interface with improved color coding and navigation (see screenshot at the bottom of this page).
  • Context-Sensitive Help – Access help tailored to the specific screen or function you’re using

You can also buy a new (printed) version of “Getting the Most Out of RootsMagic 10” at Amazon.com (Note: if you purchase through that link, this site will receive a small commission, at no cost to you).

If you are interested in trying it out, much of the general functionality available in the paid version is available in the free (Essentials) version, but you can always compare the two editions at the link below. The main differences are database tools, edit backups, and free technical support in the paid version, as well as some places and views, and source handling. The paid version offers several DNA handling features as well.
