Ahnenblatt, was updated yesterday to Ahnenblatt v4.18. Ahnenblatt. Ahnenblatt is a Windows genealogy program and version 4.18 has a “record-breaking” 65 changes, mostly optimizations (especially if you are importing a GEDCOM file from another program) as well as corrections/bug fixes.
There is a new function/feature – when looking at “Show Islands” (screenshot at the bottom of the page), you can delete an entire island. Islands, if the terminology is correctly being applied, are groups of people who may be linked to each other, but not necessarily linked to people in your direct or main tree. From my experience, islands crop up when mistakes have been made and relatives were unlinked from somebody who they were not actually related to, but that person was not removed from your database. They can become islands by mistake if a family becomes unlinked for some reason, but either way, you should abe able to bring up the islands in Ahnenblatt and see if they are related or were leftover from mistaken entries (and then delete them).
For those creating an Ancestor Book, there is a welcome feature that can deal with “duplicate ancestors”, in this case when cousins marry and there are duplicate ancestors, the duplicates can be hidden.

Changes in Ahnenblatt 4.18 – December 13, 2024 |
NEW: Show islands: new function to delete an island |
NEW: Ancestor book: option to hide duplicate ancestors |
GEDCOM import optimized for some genealogy programs – various optimizations and corrections, i.e. “faulty GEDCOM constructs, software peculiarities and other inaccuracies in GEDCOM files from third-party programs are adjusted during import by Ahnenblatt. You have to think of it in such a way that GEDCOM files go through special optimizations based on their original program, in which known inaccuracies and errors are corrected. Thus, the data is better recognized as a result of Ahnenblatt and a newly created GEDCOM file from Ahnenblatt is checked with a so-called GEDCOM validator, has almost no compatibility errors.” — Applies to these programs: Adam, Ages!, Ancestral Chronicle, Genealogy, GenPlus, GENProfi (especially the GDF total export), GENProfi family tree, GF ancestors, PC ancestors, PRO-GEN, RS ancestors and webtrees. |
Fixed: Input dialog, empty partners and children who only started with the text “…” could not be seen. |
Fixed: Books sometimes contained unnecessary blank pages, had overlapping headers/footers or too large margin spacing at the bottom of the page. |
Address management has been optimized, so that even with e.g. 100,000 addresses, they can still be displayed and edited in a high-performance manner. |
Below is a screenshot from ahnenblatt.de (the developer’s website) and the dialogue box roughly translates to “delete this island with 9 people” – you can see four islands with 61 people, 9 people, 4 people, 3 people.
