Tutorial: Convert a Spreadsheet into a GEDCOM

And another video from earlier in the week from Devon Noel Lee of Family History Fanatics (YouTube channel), this time covering what happens when you have genealogy data in a spreadsheet and want to import it into a genealogy program via a GEDCOM file. It doesn’t apply to all spreadsheets obviously, but you can save some time – I have dozens of spreadsheets covering a variety of topics from old genealogy books to military units (which is what she uses as an example).

She demonstrates Gramps and converting the spreadsheet and then exporting as a CSV and then importing into Gramps, but Gramps had its limitations (limited data import). She also covered Exel2Ged (something I’ve covered here in the past) which is limited to Microsoft Excel but can import more.

Here’s a companion article from their website:

Transforming a Spreadsheet into a GEDCOM File for Genealogy Research – Civil War Quest Pt 6

Description:

This genealogical tip might not apply to every researcher, but as more and more records of lists become available online, knowing how to put a list in a spreadsheet into a GEDCOM file could prove extremely useful. In this sixth episode, I’ll share how I converted my genealogy spreadsheet to a gedcom file for use in genealogy tree-building software.
