Ancestral Quest 16

Ancestral Quest (AQ) by Incline Software originally launched in 1994 for the Windows 3.0/3.1 platform and was one of the first mainstream genealogy programs on the Windows 3.x platform. It was the first genealogy program that was compatible with Family Search.

Ancestral Quest 3.0 was the basis for Personal Ancestral File 4.0 (PAF 4.0) and Personal Ancestral File 5.0 (PAF 5.0).

It is still in active development for the Windows 32-bit/64-bit platform as well as macOS, and the current major release, Ancestral Quest 16, was released in 2019, with many updates since (11 updates to AQ 16).

Official website is: www.ancquest.com

Other Versions:

  • Ancestry Family Tree: Ancestry.com licensed AQ for their own software.
  • Ancestral Quest Basics : “Free” version of Ancestral Quest.
  • AQ2Go! : Portable USB-based version of Ancestral Quest (since 12.0).

Company History: Incline Software, LLC, was founded in 1994 to “develop premier genealogy software tools” and is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. They also develop PAFWiz, an application to enhance the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) genealogy program.

Note: AQ 2002 (technically Ancestral Quest 10.0) was the only release named for a year. Ancestral Quest 4.0 was never used as a release number- Incline Software made the decision to name releases based on full incremental numbers when major updates were made instead of the previous incremental numbers (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, etc.) and so the jump from AQ 3.0 -> AQ 2002 (10.0) occurred, based on the new naming scheme. AQ 1.1 should have been AQ 2.0, etc.).
