Gigatrees 5.4.7

Gigatrees 5.4.7 has been released, and it’s a major update. It’s a free Windows family tree website generator/program by Tim Forsythe that creates HTML-based websites (or local SQLite3 databases) from your GEDCOM files, and version 5.4.7 comes after a “two-and-a-half month programming spree”. The changelog and screenshots of the changes are at the bottom of this post.

Gigatrees is unique among online family tree generators, in that it supports an embedded blog within the website, or a standalone blog. A lot of us that have online trees usually have to have a standalone blog such as WordPress or even something more simple such as HTML pages in addition to whatever we are using for our tree (whether it be a online PHP or HTML-based tree). It also supports an embedded or standalone photo gallery, so it’s a more rounded website creator overall. It supports GEDCOM 5.0 to GEDCOM 7.0 +.

Given that Gigatrees uses GEDCOM files to generate your online (or offline) tree, Gigatrees supports hundreds of third-party GEDCOM tags, with the most common being Ancestry.com, followed by Family Tree Maker, MyHeritage, Legacy Family Tree, Family Historian, RootsMagic, Gramps, and Ye Olde Personal Ancestral File (PAF). Gigatrees 5.4.7 – October 9, 2024 (Ancestry Member Trees (2024.01)
Captures more source metadata
Improved source record page display
Gigatrees-generated family sites now have “source pages that link every person and claim referenced by them and displays all the intricate metadata details.”
– – The details include quoted text, notes, and metadata
Dated and undated claims and their source references also have improved handling. This includes as a minor change adding translatable strings for Agency, Vessel, Cause and Type to the claim metadata.
Large changes to the handling of address and location fields.
Changes made to prevent capturing duplicate copies of data in all areas.
Added additional URL and date conversions in places where they were missing.
Fixed an issue with age detection.
Issue fixed where Gigatrees was inadvertently miscalculating the certainties on some claims, based on note references. This may result a slight lowering of your quality score.
Change in how and when the version of the program is validated – it now occurs after the introductory text (used to be prior to starting the display).
