Genealogy Software Briefs – January 5th, 2025

These are the “minor” genealogy software updates that have been released since Sunday, December 29, 2024. Even though it was a holiday week in many parts of the world, developers were very busy over the past few weeks.

The ORA and WikiTree BEE browser extensions saw several updates. Ancestor Tree Manager saw two updates with new features. Two important Family Historian plugins were updated. Gramps-web received some year-end adjustments, and Infinite Family Tree Explorer for Mac was also updated.

Note: iOS/iPadOS (iPhone, iPad) and Google Android updates, as well as browser extensions, need to be downloaded from their respective stores. It’s not uncommon for the version numbers and release dates between the same app on different platforms (iPhone vs Android) to be different or slightly off. When the updates are the same between two platforms, the updates are only listed once.

If you don’t see an update to a particular genealogy app/program that you know received an update, that’s probably because received its own story, but if not – please contact us!

• Note: I will be pruning the current genealogy software list of 2020 entries, which is only about 9 apps, and some of these may stay on the list after I look at them more.

FamilySearch: Family Tree App v5.0.2 – January 2, 2025 (Android/Google Play)

• Looks like it is bug fixes, optimizations, and perhaps some UI changes/updates – the release notes are not clear.

Gramps-web v24.12.2 – December 31st, 2024

• Incremental semantic search indexing
  • In the admin settings page, there are now two buttons for reindexing semantic search:
    • “Recreate semantic search index” creates the entire index from scratch
    • “Update semantic search idnex” does an incremental update, only generating missing entries.
  • While the first option is needed e.g. if the embedding model was changed, the second option comes in handy e.g. when an indexing process (which can take many hours to complete) was aborted halfway
• Support for open date spans
  • Gramps 5.2 introduced the concept of open date spans, such as “from 2018” or “to 2006”. These can now finally be used in all places where dates can be entered in Gramps Web.
• Fixed: Fan chart not displayed in Safari
• Fixed: Shifted message box in AI chat
• Note: This may share a similar version number to a release from earlier in December.

• Optionally include spouse of root person in ascending trees

• No specific fixes mentioned – most likely it’s related to the launch of the “LiveMemory” features.

ORA Extension (Browser Extension) v1.90 – January 6, 2025
