Seven Cookies/GedGap Ceases Support

Some sad news to report – as of March 22nd, 2024, Seven Cookies, a software company out of Queensland, Australia, has ceased to operate as a business, and they will no longer be maintaining their software.

This mainly affects genealogists using Macs, as GedGap was a Mac genealogy application/utility – GedGap was a genealogy tool or utility that assists with genealogy research by utilizing a GEDCOM file from your family tree website (such as an online service) or from your genealogy software. It would help you analyze and score your sources to “reveal gaps in the reliability of your birth and death entries” as well as assist with prioritizing where your research should be focused. It determines a confidence rating saw ell, and provides tips on where to look. You can also enter notes and flag missing sources for birth and death events. I’ve included a screenshot at the bottom to show how useful it could be.

I didn’t use it much as the last few years of its development, I had taken a bit of a break from genealogy research, but it was definitely a useful tool for many, and I’m happy to say that even on an M-series Apple Mac, it still seems to run just fine (download it below).

There was also a mobile iOS version, GedGap2Go, which did the same thing, only on your iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately support for GedGap2Go ceased development in October of 2018.

GedGap was originally released in September of 2015, with the last version, 2.7 being released in May of 2019 (there is a 2.7a with a few additional fixes at the link below).

They also had another project, RetroGen, which I want to talk about at a later date, that fascinated me, and it was a “retro-styled genealogy program” written using COBOL, and that was compliant with GEDCOM 5.5, and would run on older machines in text mode.

You can still download the last version of GedGap, GedGap 2.7a (it is free and does not have any restrictions), as well as the User Guide for GedGap 2.7a and a sample GEDCOM file through the pages below:
