GEDitCOM II Version 3.2, GEDitMobile Announced

GEDitCOM II version 3.2 has been released by John Nairn, and this is a major upgrade, focused partly on working with FamilySearch data, as well as mentioning a new iPhone app, GEDitMobile (not out yet) that will function as a mobile companion to GEDitCOM II. Many of the new features are suggested by the GEDitCOM II Google Groups users, and GEDitCOM II should remind you of the update the next time you open it.

It requires at least macOS High Sierra 10.13 or higher, and is a free upgrade for currently-registered users of GEDitCOM II and can be downloaded here: http://www.geditcom.com/GCDown.html

You can read (and ask any questions) on the official GEDitCOM II Google Groups Version 3.2 thread.

Developer’s Note: I found a large number of ancestors on FamilySearch.org on my wife’s side and decided a few new features would make adding and editing those ancestors easier. When you add a new family with two new spouses, you can create that family, the two spouses, and attach to an existing child now in one step. I did most data entry by control-clicking on individuals in am ancestor family tree and using this new feature to create the next generation of ancestors.

GEDitCOM II 3.2 Changes
New: When you add a new family with two new spouses, you can create that family, the two spouses, and attach to an existing child now in one step.
New: FamilySearch” menu command that lets you enter a query and post to their two data bases. The query is pre-filled with the individual you are viewing. The big advantage of FamilySearch.org is that it is free (you have to create a free account to search from within GEDitCOM II though). A disadvantage is the data are not scrutinized for accuracy. Many do have sources to help you verify if the information is correct.

Note: that some of the verification sources require access to paid servies.
Fix: While entering lots of ancestors, I was also getting periodic crashes that I think others have noticed but I could never reproduce. They occurred during an unintentional drag and drop after just editing a different field. I tried a possible fix. I could not tell why it would fix it, but after that change, I never had another crash.
GEDitCOM II Mentions an iPhone app that “will be a good companions to GEDitCOM II“. The developer of this new GEDitMobile is hoping for a release this summer.
