MacFamilyTree 11 & MobileFamilyTree 11 Released, 50% Off

Synium Software released MacFamilyTree 11 and MobileFamilyTree 11 a day earlier than expected, and for a short time, they will be 50% off in their respective stores (Apple’s Mac App Store and iOS App Store). The 50% off is both a promotional sale, but also is a result of the respective app stores now allowing for upgrade pricing for owners of a previous version.

To say this is a massive upgrade is an understatement. To quote Synium, it’s “the most comprehensive update in the entire product history so far. Nearly every area of our critically acclaimed apps for exploring your family history has been either re-developed or vastly improved.” I believe it.

Some of the new features include (and I’ll be doing a deep dive in the coming days to cover this):

  • New photo editing/colorization/repair features, including background remove.
  • New expanded places management, including place details, coordinate searches, alternate nam information, and Wikipedia integration for places.
  • New website creation tools.
  • Updated/improved user interface.
  • New backup features (including MobileFamilyTree).

Keep in mind that MobileFamilyTree and MacFamilyTree closely mirror their feature set, and updates in one wlil be reflected in the other through the use of iCloud synchronization.

One interesting new feature I will be looking at is “Influential Persons” – this may tie into the “FAN” methodology – “Friends, Associates, and Neighbors” and while the FAN method is more about cluster research for most genealogists, this can definitely tie into that. It can be represented visually with a tree, the relationships with other people in the database can be defined by the user (they don’t have to be related by blood or marriage) complete with sources and notes. Most of us have arguably come across one or more influential persons, whether that is somebody related by blood, marriage, or location. Maybe it was an ancestor that did something that directly influenced multiple generations of their descendants.

I’m also going to be looking at the new photo colorization, enhancement, repair and other editing features. MacFamilyTree 10 and MobileFamilyTree 10 added the ability to use your phone as a scanner to take photos of pictures and documents, and these new features will most likely keep a lot of people from having to use their photo editing software.

Here are some of the new features (there is a video at the bottom of this page):

  • New Photo Colorization, Enhancement, Image Repair, Background Removal and Editing Features
  • Completely New and Revolutionary Places Management
  • Completely New: Place Details
  • New: Search for coordinates and alternate names

  1. So sad!!! Just 1 week ago I bought the Familytree version 10 and there was no pop-up or a warning that a new version would be released very very soon!

Now I have to buy a new version.
