Kintree: Family Tree Maker App 3.5.3

Kintree: Family Tree Maker App 3.5.3 is a minor update – some bug fixes, and while I normally don’t write a post about minor updates of mobile apps (unless it’s a serious bug fix or a new addition), I thought I would mention this genealogy app in light of the article on the iMeUsWe app I wrote a few days ago.

Kintree: Family Tree Maker App is another similar family tree maker/genealogy social media app, and I guess maybe we can just call it a genealogy social media app, or a social media genealogy app.

Like iMeUsWe, which was focused on families in India or with relatives in India, it seems to have a focus on SouthWest/Southeast Asia, and I’m wondering if this is tied into the role that social media plays in those parts of the world. It would be too long to discuss in this post, but obviously social media is treated differently in different parts of the world – for some it’s about connecting with family, with others (especially here in the West) it’s about “being seen” and showing off something and/or projecting an image. In other parts of the world, it goes beyond merely sharing a few photos or videos, and can function as your email and banking app as well as what amounts to your texting/chat app.

If you removed the genealogy features from Kintree, it would be like a lot of other social media apps, albeit more of a social media platform than an app – it even calls itself a “family link hub”, but it includes collaborate family tree building, including linking other Kintree users, It features photo sharing, event reminders (birthdays, etc.), event planning, and even a living will functionality (KinWill). There is also “Genetic Testing with MapMyGenome”, but I’m not sure how that functions – if it’s merely a health/hereditary test, or if it actually connects you with others who similar DNA matches.

Kintree supports the following languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Bangla, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malaysian, Assamese.

There was a recent update to Kintree, Kintree 3.4.9 back in August, that built on the social media aspects of Kintree – namely public posting/share of genealogy information and not just within your family.

I’m fascinated by these kinds of apps, and while some genealogy apps produced by Western companies have some social media/social networking, none of them approach the level of Kintree or IMeUsWe.
