There are a lot of Android-based genealogy apps for Android smart phones and tablets. Some good, some bad, some in-between, some abandoned. I have not been ignoring them – in fact, I have an Android device to check them out with.
It’s just that it can be a little difficult to track the version history and release dates because of the way the Google Play store for Android is laid out, and what information is contained in the entries (they don’t retain the full version history like Apple’s App Stores for Mac and iPhone and iPad).
It’s really a matter of developing a workflow to track them and I’m working that out, and there are plenty of Android apps for genealogists.
In fact, in August alone, from what I can determine, there were 13 genealogy apps that had at least one software update (and several had multiple updates), with another 7 genealogy apps for Android that received at least one software update between January 1, 2024, and August 30, 2024. If I go back to 2023, there are another 3 apps (at minimum) that saw updates then.
That means at least 23 actively-developed genealogy apps are available for Android users! Many of them also have iOS/iPad versions for iPhone and iPad users, but there were a few that were Android-only.
Here’s a list of them (no particular order) – I’ll be putting together entries and comparison tables as things go along. FamilySearch International leads the top publishers/developers of mobile genealogy software on the Android platform (just as they do on iOS/iPadOS). It includes games, full genealogy database apps, as well as several apps for recording genealogy (documenting lives, etc.).
